Histopathological Observation of Hemorrhoid

Abstract
The author made a study on the histopathological observation of 40 cases of surgically excised hemorrhoids.
The results are as follows;
1. Among the 40 cases, 14 cases were external hemorrhoid, 11 cases internal hemorrhoid, and 15 cases mixed form.
Histologically multiple varices were observed in all cases.
2. Thrombus formation in the hemorrhoid varices was observed in 13 cases(32.5) and 3 cases of these revealed fresh thrombi, 7 cases organizing thrombin, and 3 cases combination of fresh and organizing thrombi.
The incidence of thrombus formation was 28.6% in external hemorrhoid, 45.5% in internal hemorrhoid, and 26.7% in mixed form.
Namely it was highest in the internal hemorrhoid.
3. In adjacent tissue of the varices of hemorrhoids congestion, edema, hemorrhage and mild inflammatory cell infiltration were noted in most cases.
Tissue necrosis was obseved in about half of the entire cases, and fibrosis in few cases.
4. Histologically rectal mucosa was observed in only 15 cases. All of these cases revealed mild or moderate proctitis, and 5 cases which were either internal or mixed hemorrhoids had been proved to be squamous metaplasia of rectal mucosa.
